Live Above the Common

Do not conform to the pattern of this world…
Romans 12:2 (NIV)

God is not asking you to separate from all that is common. He’s asking you not to live under it. It’s not that God minds the normal rhythms of life. He doesn’t mind if you have a car… if you like to dress a certain way… if you want to go out there and make some money… go to the beach when you get a vacation. He doesn’t mind any of that. He just doesn’t want you to live so under it that you are defined by it.

Holiness is transcendence. It calls for us to transcend common human motivations. It is waking up every day to battle, resist, and surrender self-interest for God’s glory and for others’ good. It is to push back on temporal gain so you can press toward eternal significance. Holiness is to see value not in cultural conformity, but in divine transformation.

And living above the common means refusing the easiest response. Instead of revenge, you forgive. Instead of hoarding, you are generous. Instead of pride, you offer humility. Instead of fear, you walk by faith. Instead of despair, you give the world hope. And instead of hatred, you conquer life with love.

Common ethics stop at behavior. Holy living goes deeper. Where common ethics say, “Don’t murder,” holy living says, “Don’t even harbor anger.” Common ethics say, “Don’t steal.” Holy living says, “Work to give to those in need.” This is purposeful non-conformity. It is living set apart without living sealed off.
